Four-month-old Prisma Ortiz Ruiz disappeared more than two years ago but wasn't reported missing to Garland police until last August, authorities say.
Now she's presumed dead, and her father is wanted on a capital murder charge.
A tip about the baby's fate led authorities to Joe Pool Lake, but air and ground searches failed to locate any remains, Garland police spokesman Joe Harn said Tuesday.
Harn said forensics experts told investigators that, given the infant's size and how long she's been missing, "it would be common to find little or no remains."
Police suspect Selvin Alfredo Ortiz, 28, killed Prisma and fled to El Salvador. The girl's mother, 30-year-old Sonia Calderon Ruiz, is accused of helping him dump the body.
She is charged with tampering with evidence and was being held in the Dallas County Jail on $65,000 bail.
Sonia Ruiz has at least five other children, ages 3 to 11, and was under investigation for neglectful supervision in 2006, said Marissa Gonzales, a spokeswoman for Child Protective Services. CPS took her other children into custody that year and was later awarded permanent conservatorship.
Gonzales said agency records didn't name Selvin Ortiz or any other man as the children's father.
Family and friends have not seen Prisma since August 2006, but no one reported her missing until last August, Harn said. Police have verified her birth on April 27, 2006, at Baylor Hospital of Garland.
Family members could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
In a similar case, authorities in Kansas say the parents who failed to report their 11-year-old adopted son missing nearly a decade ago are "people of interest" in the case.
Investigators only recently learned Adam Herrman was missing and are focused on finding him, Butler County Sheriff Craig Murphy said. Adam was 11 when he disappeared in 1999 from a mobile home park in Towanda, where he lived.
Authorities would not say whether they believed Adam, who would now be 21, is alive.

These stories are so disturbing. One kills the child and the other covers it up. They should both be punished to the max.

Garland police said someone finally reported a baby girl's disappearance two years after her parents allegedly dumped her lifeless body near Joe Pool Lake.
Police received a tip about 4-month-old Prisma Ortizruiz's death in August. A caller said the baby was last seen two years earlier.
Investigators determined her parents, 28-year-old Selvin Alfredo Ortiz and 30-year-old Sonia Ruiz, are responsible.
Ortiz allegedly killed the baby sometime in August 2006 inside an apartment in the 1400 block of Forest Lane. The couple then dumped their daughter's body near Joe Pool Lake, police said.
Police have not been able to find evidence of the baby's remains in the area around the lake. But, forensic experts said it is not uncommon for there to be little or no remains because of the victim's age and the legnth of time missing, a release states.
Ortiz, who is believed to be currently living in El Salvador, was charged with capital murder. Ruiz was charged for tampering with evidence.
Police are not yet releasing details about how they suspect the baby was killed.

A mother is in jail and a father is on the run after both were charged in the death of their infant daughter, who disappeared two years ago, police said.
Selvin Alfredo Ortiz, 28, is accused of capital murder, and Sonia Calderon Ruiz, 30, is accused of tampering with evidence, said officer Joe Harn, a Garland police spokesman. Ruiz was arrested in West Texas and was being held Tuesday in the Dallas County Jail, Harn said. Police believe Ortiz fled to El Salvador after charges were filed Dec. 31, Harn said.
"We've not had any contact with him," Harn said.
The couple’s daughter, Prisma Ortizruiz, was last seen by family and friends more than two years ago, when she was four months old, Harn said.
The pair don’t have family in the North Texas area, and it is unclear why police weren’t contacted earlier, Harn said.
Police believe Prisma was killed in August 2006 in an apartment in the 1400 block of Forest Lane and that her body was disposed of near Joe Pool Lake in Tarrant County, Harn said. Ruiz and Ortiz moved to West Texas some time later, Harn said.
After receiving a tip from West Texas, investigators searched unsuccessfully three times for the child's body near Joe Pool Lake. Forensics experts told police it would not be unusual for little or no remains to be found after two years, Harn said.

Does anyone know if they ever located Selvin Alfredo Ortiz? When is/was the trial? I can't find any updates on if these two were convicted.
I hope Prisma receives justice. :1222423:
