Sissonville men sought in candle store break-in

by Ashley B. Craig
Daily Mail staff

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Deputies are looking for two Charleston men after a break-in at a Sissonville candle shop.

Kanawha County Sheriff's Deputy A.R. Crawford was dispatched to investigate a breaking and entering at Creations of Beauty candle shop on Call Road on March 22.

The deputy arrived to find the store's front door completely shattered as well as a white Toyota pickup with its engine running in front of the building, according to a complaint filed in Kanawha Magistrate Court.

Dispatchers advised Crawford that the truck had been driven there by the suspects and that one of the men had fled on foot toward Interstate 77.

Crawford found two witnesses - a man and a woman - standing in front of the store. The man, Eric Haynes, told deputies that he'd received a call from his mother-in-law, Peggy Morrison. She lives above the candle shop and told him the store had been broken into, deputies said.

Haynes' wife, Tonya, is the owner of the candleshop.

Haynes said he had arrived to find a burglary in progress and had used his own vehicle to block in the white pickup.

The driver was identified as Stanley Ray Hammack, 48, but he was not in the truck at the time and police believe he escaped the building through a door in the back storage room.

The passenger was identified as Stephen R. Blankenship, 52. Both are residents of Sissonville.

Haynes confronted Blankenship, but he fled on foot, heading east on Call Road toward Interstate 77 just before deputies arrived.

State Police troopers arrived to assist, as did Deputy J.L. Lester, Sgt. J.S. Elkins, and Lt. G.S. Young from the sheriff's department.

Tonya Haynes checked her store for damage and pointed out that someone had opened the cash register at the front of the store, the complaint stated. Deputies located the change drawer in the back of the store still containing cash, deputies stated.

Deputies said they contacted Peggy Hammack, who is Stanley Hammack's mother and the owner of the pickup truck. She told deputies that her son had been staying with Blankenship.

Deputies searched the truck and found a purple spiral notebook containing floor plans of dwellings and other buildings along with a pair of large black bolt cutters and various government documents with Hammack's and Blankenship's names on them, deputies said.

Hammack was charged with breaking and entering a building other than a dwelling. Blankenship was charged with breaking and entering a building other than a dwelling and with aiding and abetting.

Police were still searching for them.
