Hidalgo County sheriff's deputies are investigating the discovery of a human skull north of McAllen.

Investigators told Action 4 News that the skull was found near the intersection of 12 Mile Line and Wallace Road.

A field worker discovered a human skull on Thursday but now deputies returned to the scene on Friday morning.

They are searching for more human remains.

Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Treviņo told Action 4 News that investigators are using all-terrain vehicles and shovels to search the area for more skeletal remains.

Meanwhile, the skull has been given to a pathologist for an autopsy.

Treviņo said he hopes that autopsy will reveal possible trauma, gender, age and how long the skull had been there.

The sheriff said authorities are currently checking missing persons files and are prepared to conduct dental and DNA analysis.

I hope they've found more of this person's remains. The more they have then the more information they can ascertain.

Human skull found near Edinburg

By Jared Taylor, The Monitor

EDINBURG - Detectives continued to survey an area northwest of the city Friday, where a farm worker discovered a human skull buried in a field.

Hidalgo County sheriff's deputies responded to the area near Mile 12 and Wallace roads about noon Thursday, Sheriff Lupe Treviņo said.

"It was stripped clean of tissue," he said, adding that many of the skull's teeth remain intact.

The skull was taken to a pathologist Friday morning to try to identify the person from dental records as well as learn how long the remains had been buried, Treviņo said.

Pathologists can't determine a person's gender from examining the skull alone, he said. But the exam could reveal how the person died and whether foul play was involved.

"We're going to look at this as a homicide until it can be proven otherwise," Treviņo said. "But we're not going to tally this event as the first (murder) of 2009 because we don't know."

Law enforcement agencies typically treat suspicious deaths as homicides until the cause of death is known.

Authorities plan to compare the medical exam results with information from outstanding missing persons cases to try to identify the person, Treviņo said.

No updates on the article so I guess it means no other skeletal remains were found other than the skull. :(

I sent in a tip on the website with this county and advised of the skeletal remains found in Elmendorf, Bexar County. I am just not sure it took because I got a cannot load page after I sent it. I thought I'd see if Bexar Co. has an email address listed to send information just in case the Edinburg one didn't take.

I knew it could be a long shot that the two are related but one never knows.
