ANDERSON — Anderson resident George Harrison Jr. wandered away from his home sometime between Friday night and Saturday morning, and his family still was looking for the 71-year-old man as of Sunday night.
Harrison has been diagnosed as being in the beginning stages of suffering Alzheimer’s disease, said Tykeshia Martin, one of Harrison’s six grandchildren. She said Harrison has wandered away maybe three or four times before, once overnight. But he has always been found or found his own way back within several hours, Martin said.
Ellen Harrison, Martin’s mother and George Harrison’s daughter, lives with Harrison and keeps a close eye on him, Martin said. Ellen Harrison told police she woke up at 8 a.m. Saturday and saw that her father was not in the home they share at 708 Cleveland Ave. in Anderson. The last time Ellen Harrison saw George Harrison was 7:30 p.m. Friday, when he went to bed, she said.
Family members said George Harrison was last seen wearing gray pants and brown slippers. He is a 6-foot-2-inch, 170-pound black male with brown eyes, gray hair and a goatee.
“We’re not even sure if he had a shirt on or not,” said Anita Donley, Anderson County emergency services/public safety spokeswoman.
The following agencies were involved in the search for Harrison as of Sunday night, according to officials: the city of Anderson Police Department; the Anderson County Technical Rescue Team; the Broadway, Homeland Park and city of Anderson fire departments; the Anderson County public safety department; 911 dispatchers; and the Anderson city and county K-9 units.
Civil Air Patrol helicopters were on standby Sunday night with heat and infared sensors, officials said.
A mobile command post for the search was set up at the Hanna-Westside Extension Campus on McDuffie Street in downtown Anderson around 7:30 p.m. Sunday, but the search began early Sunday.
Everyone living within a two-mile radius of Harrison’s home was asked to check their front and back yards.
Multiple all-terrain vehicles, each carrying a medic, were sent out in shifts Sunday as well as part of the search.
Authorities also are using a program through which multiple local businesses use their billboards to alert the public about missing people.
Harrison’s family members are searching the area also and putting up fliers, Martin said.
Ellen Harrison said her father has talked about returning to his former home on Oliver Street in Anderson.
George Harrison is a former construction worker and also lives with his wife, Sarah, at the Cleveland Avenue home.
“I know he likes to play checkers and watch old Western movies. He likes to keep to himself,” Martin said.
She said George Harrison used to enjoy walking but hasn’t gone out much lately.
Anyone with information about the case or who has seen Harrison should call the city of Anderson Police Department at (864) 260-4444.

Anderson Police say a man who they had reported missing was found dead Monday morning, about 200 yards from his home in a cemetery.
George Harrison, Junior, 71, was reported missing by his family on January 9 from his home on Cleveland Avenue. C. Randall Williams, Anderson Police spokesman, says there were no signs of foul play.
The family says he suffered the beginning stages of Alzheimer’s. He left his home sometime between 7:PM Friday night and 8:AM Saturday.
Police released a description and photo of Harrison Sunday afternoon in hopes of getting the help from the public to find him.
Harrison lived on Cleveland Avenue and was found not far away, lying inside the Silverbrook cemetery.
The coroner says he died from hypothermia. Search crews worked throughout the weekend to find him, searching a mile radius around his home.
The coroner says there is evidence Harrison stumbled and fell. Once he fell, they say it is likely he laid there helpless, unable to get up. The coroner says he was dressed in a light robe, pajamas and slippers, and there is no way he could have survived the elements. Harrison started taking off his clothes before he died. That is common in cases of hypothermia because as it sets in, people feel unusually warm.
