It wasn't like Hunter Army Airfield soldier Charlana McKinsie to leave her daughter stranded at school.
Doing so on Monday prompted the Savannah-Chatham police department's special-victims and violent-crimes unit investigators to embark on a widespread search.
McKinsie, 32, failed to pick up her 14-year-old daughter from Windsor Forest High School on Monday afternoon. By Tuesday morning, the missing soldier's mother and other relatives were extremely worried and decided to call metro police.
"She didn't pick up her daughter from school, and that's out of character for her. She does this on a daily basis," said metro police special-victims unit Sgt. Rob Gavin during an emergency Tuesday afternoon press conference.

Savannah police search for missing Ga. soldier
January 14, 2009 22:55 EST
SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) -- Authorities in Georgia are searching for an Army soldier who was reported missing by her mother in Cleveland.
A Savannah-Chatham County police spokeswoman says Sgt. Charlana McKenzie was last seen by her teenage daughter Sunday night.
The 14-year-old girl told police her mother didn't pick her up from school as usual on Monday. When the 32-year-old Army health care specialist didn't report for duty, officials at nearby Fort Stewart called McKenzie's mother, Deborah Scott. The Cleveland woman then called police.
Scott says she's in shock and that McKenzie would not leave her child or her job.
Police say it's alarming enough that they've launched an intensive search and alerted neighboring states. They haven't said they suspect foul play.

Missing Woman’s Mother Asks For Help
Published: January 14, 2009
The mother of a woman missing since Monday has arrived in Savannah and is pleading for any information on her daughter’s whereabouts. 32-year-old Charlana McKenzie was supposed to pick up her daughter after school on Monday - but never showed up. Now her mother is here with other family members awaiting any word.
Deborah Scott arrived in town from her home in Cleveland today - other family members have traveled in from Atlanta. They’re taking care of McKenzie’s 14-year old daughter in the woman’s Georgetown home and hoping for word that she’s been found. Charlana was last seen at her home by her daughter on Sunday and there were signs that she was there early Monday morning as the young girl got ready for school. The 14-year-old saw her mother’s car drive by as she stood at her school bus stop around 6:40 that morning. Her family says that was 40 minutes after she was supposed to be at work…and she hadn’t contacted her supervisor as she usually would to let him know she’d be late. Scott says, “I still don’t know that something is wrong - I just know that she’s missing and it’s not like her to do this and we just want her back safely and we want everyone to be you know on the lookout for - if they see her car or if they hear from her or if anyone sees her or anything - just let us know, the whole family is concerned.”
Charlana McKenzie is 5 feet, 8 inches tall - weighs about 140 pounds and has green/gray eyes.
Her car is a light green 2008 Toyota Camry with a North Carolina vanity plate that reads f-r-v-n-I-l-a. Her purse and laptop are missing as well. Anyone with information on her whereabouts is asked to contact Metro Police or Crimestoppers at 912-234-2020.

McKenzie's mother Deborah Scott.
SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Charlana McKenzie, 32, has been missing since Monday morning. See Police searching for missing woman.
She didn't show up to work at Fort Stewart and she didn't pick up her daughter from school. While police are continuing their investigation, McKenzie's family is in a panic.
McKenzie and her 14-year-old daughter are inseparable. They've moved all over the country together as McKenzie, an Army sergeant, transferred from base to base. They just recently moved to Savannah.
Her daughter was the last one to see her. That was at 6:40am on Monday. "She said she was standing waiting for the school bus and she saw her mom's car go by," said McKenzie's mother Deborah Scott.
Scott just flew in from Cleveland, Ohio this morning. "This is just uncharacteristic of her period. It's just a shock to me it's like this isn't real. The last call I ever expected to get is that she was missing from work."
It was the Army that called Scott and told her McKenzie was missing. McKenzie is a health car specialist with the 3rd Infantry Division's 1st Brigade Combat Team.
"I don't know what to think. I don't want to jump to any conclusions. I don't want to say the wrong thing, I'm just holding on," she said. "My stomach is in knots, just the normal thing a parent would go through when a child went missing."
The rest of the family in Cleveland is just as worried. Muriel Sadler is McKenzie's aunt. "Usually 48 hours, there's trouble. Something is not right," she said.
Scott has had a chance to look around her daughter's Savannah home. She said her laptop computer, a duffle bag with Army physical training clothes inside and her cell phone are gone. But nothing seems suspicious.
"No signs of a struggle or anything like that," she said.
Scott is hoping someone spots her or her car. It's a light green 2008 Toyota Camry with a North Carolina vanity tag FRVNILA. "That French vanilla license plate is kind of catchy."
Right now, Scott's just hoping to hear from McKenzie soon. "Everybody is worried about you, we all love you and we are all very, very concerned and would like for you to call us or text or something any kind of way you can if you can," said Scott. "We are all very very worried."
Scott said her daughter is married, but estranged from her husband. Last she heard, Travis McKenzie lives in Colorado.
Scott said McKenzie also had a boyfriend recently. She said police have already talked to him and he is now in Ohio.
If you have any information about Charlana McKenzie's disappearance, call the Savannah-Chatham police special victim's unit at 912.651.6742 or CrimeStoppers at 912.234.2020.

Police Search for Georgia Soldier After Daughter Reports Her Missing
Wednesday, January 14, 2009
SAVANNAH, Ga. — Savannah-Chatham County police were searching Wednesday for an Army soldier who was reported missing after she failed to pick up her teenage daughter from school.
Sgt. Charlana McKenzie, 32, was last seen by her 14-year-old daughter Sunday night, police spokeswoman Judy Pal said. The daughter told police she normally goes to school after McKenzie heads to work at nearby Fort Stewart, but her mother picks her up every afternoon, which she failed to do Monday.
Though police aren't saying they suspect foul play, Pal said the circumstances were alarming enough to launch an intensive search.
"Our biggest concern is that she's very dedicated to her child and this is completely out of character for this woman," Pal said. "She's never gone missing like this. It's very strange."
Pal said investigators were interviewing some of McKenzie's relatives who rushed to Savannah after they found out she was missing. They were also trying to track down the soldier's husband, who they believe lives in Florida or North Carolina.
Fort Stewart spokesman Kevin Larson said McKenzie had been assigned as a health care specialist to a support battalion of the 3rd Infantry Division's 1st Brigade Combat team since November. She lived in a house on Savannah's suburban south side, about 30 miles from Fort Stewart's main gate.
McKenzie was described as 5 feet, 8 inches tall, weighing about 140 pounds. She has dark hair and gray-green eyes. Police said McKenzie has also gone by the last name Reese.
Police were also searching for the woman's car — a light green 2008 Toyota Camry with a North Carolina vanity tag that reads "FRVNILA."

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Police are still searching for a missing mother. Charlana McKenzie was last seen Sunday at her Georgetown home.
Savannah-Chatham Metro police tell us she was supposed to pick up her daughter from Windsor Forest High School Monday, but never showed up.
Police say this is out of character for McKenzie and they are concerned something may have happened to her.
Police were not notified of McKenzie's disappearance until Tuesday when her mother in Colorado reported her missing.
Tuesday night police searched McKenzie's home and spoke to neighbors trying to figure out anything that would shed some light onto where McKenzie could be.
We also spoke to a number of neighbors but most told us they didn't know anything about McKinsie beside the fact she was in the military and living with her husband.
No one seemed to even know that she had a child. Even the neighbor they share the adjoining wall with at their town home admits he'd only seen them a few times. "They seemed ok, said Theo Wilson, "seemed to be distant, they were very distant, stayed to themselves."
Police say McKenzie could also be going by the name Charlana Reese.
They're also looking for her car. A light green Toyota Camry with North Carolina vanity tag FRNVNILA.
As for the husband police have not been able to locate him as of yet. Anyone who sees this car or McKenzie is asked to call 911 immediately or call CrimeStoppers at 234.2020.

Savannah police search for missing Ga. soldier

SAVANNAH, Ga. —

Authorities in Georgia were searching Wednesday for an Army soldier who was reported missing after she failed to pick up her teenage daughter from school.
Sgt. Charlana McKenzie, 32, was last seen by her 14-year-old daughter Sunday night, Savannah-Chatham County police spokeswoman Judy Pal said. The daughter normally goes to school after McKenzie heads to work at nearby Fort Stewart in Savannah, but she told police her mother picks her up every afternoon, which she failed to do Monday.
Fort Stewart officials called McKenzie’s mother, Deborah Scott of Cleveland, after the Army health care specialist didn’t report for duty. Scott called Savannah police on Tuesday.
“She would not leave her daughter or leave her job,” Scott said. “I’m in shock. I don’t want to jump to any conclusions. I’m just holding on.”
Though police aren’t saying they suspect foul play, Pal said the circumstances were alarming enough to launch an intensive search and alert authorities in neighboring states such as Florida and South Carolina.
“Our biggest concern is that she’s very dedicated to her child and this is completely out of character for this woman,” Pal said. “She’s never gone missing like this. It’s very strange.”
Sitting in the sparsely furnished living room of the Savannah duplex where McKenzie lives, Scott said her granddaughter noticed nothing wrong at the house when she got ready for school Monday morning and noted her mother had left her lunch money on the kitchen counter.
Scott said her granddaughter thought she saw McKenzie’s car go past the school bus stop at 6:45 a.m. Monday, which the girl considered odd because normally her mother was at work by then.
Police said McKenzie’s purse and laptop were gone from the house, and Scott said the duffel bag she normally carried to work also wasn’t there.
Scott said family members have been calling McKenzie’s cell phone and sending her text messages, but have gotten no replies.
Pal said investigators were interviewing Scott and other relatives who rushed to Savannah. They were also trying to track down the soldier’s husband, who they believe lives in Florida or North Carolina.
Scott said her daughter had been separated from her husband, Travis McKenzie, but had recently been living with another man.
“She had a friend living with her, but they broke up because supposedly she was going back to her husband,” said Scott, who declined to elaborate.
Scott did not name the man who had been living with her daughter and she said she doesn’t know where McKenzie’s husband is living.
“There’s a lot of leads we’re following up on,” Pal said when asked about the two men. “We’re not going to get into a lot of detail about it right now.”
McKenzie had been in the Army about 12 years, her mother said, and recently transferred to Fort Stewart from Fort Bragg, N.C.
She has been assigned since November to a support battalion of the 3rd Infantry Division’s 1st Brigade Combat team, said Fort Stewart spokesman Kevin Larson.
McKenzie lived with her daughter in Georgetown, a quiet suburban community on Savannah’s south side, about 30 miles from Fort Stewart’s main gate.
McKenzie was described as 5 feet, 8 inches tall, weighing about 140 pounds. She has dark hair and gray-green eyes. Police said McKenzie has also gone by the last name Reese.
Police were also searching for the woman’s car — a light green 2008 Toyota Camry with a North Carolina vanity tag that reads “FRVNILA” — which her mother said was shorthand for “French vanilla.”
Scott said her daughter sounded fine when they last spoke Sunday, after Scott sent a photo of her new hair style to McKenzie’s cell phone.
“She sounded great, she was happy,” Scott said. “I still don’t know that something is wrong. I just know she’s missing and it’s not like her to do this. I just want her back safely.”

http://www.sunnewspapers.net/articles/fnnews.aspx?articleID=8286&fnpg=0
SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — Savannah police say their search for a missing Fort Stewart soldier is now largely focused on Florida.
Sgt. Charlana McKenzie, a 32-year-old Army medic, has been missing since she failed to pick up her 14-year-old daughter from school Monday.
Savannah-Chatham County police spokesman Gene Harley said Friday leads in the case have caused investigators to concentrate much of their search on central and southeastern Florida. He declined to be more specific.
Police are keeping a lookout for McKenzie's light-green Toyota Camry, which has a vanity license plate that reads "FRVNILA" — shorthand for "French vanilla."

Harley said police were urging McKenzie to contact her family and the Army, which could pursue charges against her for being absent without leave.
Deborah Scott, McKenzie’s mother, said Friday afternoon she still had not heard from her daughter.
“It’s not only uneasy, I don’t even understand,” said Scott, who rushed to Savannah from Cleveland, Ohio, after McKenzie was reported missing.
Fort Stewart spokesman Kevin Larson said the Army now considers McKenzie to be AWOL, but has not taken out a warrant for her arrest in hopes that she returns on her own.
It will be up to McKenzie’s commanders to determine whether she faces some form of administrative discipline or a court-martial, Larson said.
“The hope is she comes home, comes back to her family and back to work,” Larson said.
Harley said Savannah police have also notified the state Division of Family and Children Services of McKenzie’s case because she left her daughter behind when she went to Florida. McKenzie is married but is separated from her husband, who lives in another state.
