Authorities Tuesday asked for the public's help looking for two county men reported missing in unconnected disappearances.

One, Albert "Roy" Fillman, 65, was reported missing by family after he failed to show up to work for a few days. No one has heard from him since mid-December and he doesn't have a history of missing work or breaking contact from his family, according to Santa Cruz police.

The other, Ted Kryger, is a developmentally disabled 49-year-old man who walked away from the Corralitos adult care facility where he lives more than two weeks ago, the Sheriff's Office reported. Kryger has left before, but requires medication. He likes to go to forested areas.

Foul play is not suspected in either disappearance, authorities said.

Fillman has been missing since Dec. 17. He has a fondness for the Big Sur area, according to his family, and it's possible he traveled to that region, police said. His vehicle, a 2004 gold Honda Accord with California license plate 4HYE405 has not been located. Police also searched his home but reported finding no information to help them determine what happened to him.

Police have entered all of the information about Fillman's disappearance into a statewide database, but have not had any hits.

Just after Kryger's disappearance, which was reported to sheriff's deputies around 7 a.m. on Dec. 28, the Sheriff's Office launched a full-scale search and rescue operation for him in hopes of finding Kryger

before he had traveled far from his home on Brown's Valley Road. The search was unsuccessful.

Kryger walks everywhere. He has no access to money or a vehicle, and does not ride the bus, according to Sgt. Fred Plageman with the Sheriff's Office. Kryger avoids contact with others, especially police, but is not dangerous.

"He poses no risk to anyone," Plageman said.

Kryger has walked away before - once he was gone for six weeks - but authorities are worried because of the time of year and because he needs medication, which he does not have with him, according to the Sheriff's Office.

"He could be anywhere," Plageman said, rattling off a number of rural South County roads that Kryger may have traveled along, including Day Valley, Valencia, Fern Flat and Browns Valley. "So now it's been a long time and we're concerned that when the weather turns back to winter conditions he could be in grave danger of exposure."

Kryger was wearing a white long-sleeved shirt, tan pants and brown shoes when he left the dependent care home where he has lived for the past eight years.

He feels a need to take care of the forest, Plageman said, and will compulsively remove trash and debris from creek beds, then pile it on the river banks. Kryger will sustain himself with water from the creek, fallen fruit from trees and food found in the trash, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Plageman said it's likely a hiker, runner, mountain biker or person tending to their land will be the one to spot Kryger. The Sheriff's Office asks anyone who sees him call the 24-hour dispatch line at 471-1121 and if someone contacts Kryger, to call 911.

CORRALITOS, Calif. -- The Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Department is asking for the public’s help with finding an at-risk missing person who is unable to care for himself, deputies said.

Theodore “Teddy” Kryger, 49, was last seen Dec. 28, 2008 at a dependent care home on Browns Valley Road.

Kryger may be unnecessarily concerned that he is in trouble for running away, which may cause him to hide or ignore calls from searchers, officials said.

Kryger also takes medication for a health condition.

He has also been known to frequent forested areas of Corralitos, Aptos and the Forest of Nisene Marks State Park.

He is described as being friendly, but he is also shy and a loner.

Deputies said that Kryger is compulsive about cleaning up the environment and has been known to place trash into sorted piles along the roadways.

I know that area well. It is very rural, and forrested. It would be easy to get lost, or stay hidden. Hopefully someone will spot him.

Ted Kryger
CORRALITOS - Authorities continue to look for a developmentally disabled man who walked away Dec. 28 from the Corralitos area facility where he had lived for nearly 15 years.

Ted Kryger, 49, likes to follow creek beds into the mountains or toward the Monterey Bay, according to Debbi Sanchez, the service provider at Kryger's home, Aptos Hills Ranch.

"Nisene Marks (State Park) is his favorite but he's even been as far - he used to run from Salinas over to a place in Aptos. He has traveled and he's been doing this for years and years," Sanchez said. "We're just really concerned this time just because of the cold and just really want to find him."

Tuesday, sheriff's deputies began distributing missing persons fliers, focusing on running, biking and hiking groups that frequent Nisense Marks.

Foul play is not suspected in Kryger's disappearance and he not considered dangerous, though he is skittish around people.

"He's friendly but he will run if he is not ready to come home yet, if he's not done with his work," Sanchez said.

Sanchez said Kryger likes to pull trash - even items like tires and shopping carts - out of creeks and stack it on the creek beds, and suggested people watch piles of debris.

"Maybe they haven't seen him but they've seen unusual signs on their property," Sanchez said, talking about the trash piles. "That's a real tell tale sign that Ted's been there."

Kryger is 5 feet 8 inches tall, 200 pounds with blue eyes and brown hair. He likely has
a beard. If people have seen Kryger or signs of him, they're asked to call the Sheriff's Office 24-hour dispatch at 471-1121. If he is contacted, call 911.

Missing man found, seems fine

http://www.santacruzsentinel.com/localnews/ci_11478007

A missing developmentally disabled man was found safe Friday morning nearly 40 miles from where he lives, the Sheriff's Office reported.

Ted Kryger, 49, walked away from the Corralitos adult care facility where he lives on Dec. 27. He was found staying in a ramshackle campsite off Highway 101 near Chualar after a state Department of Transportation worker contacted the

Sheriff's Office on Thursday night, according to Sgt. Fred Plageman.

The road worker had encountered Kryger near that location on Dec. 29 and talked with him while the worker's crew cleaned the highway, according to the Sheriff's Office.

"Apparently the guy Kryger came up and told them how he hates people who litter," Plageman said.

Kryger stayed behind to continue cleaning up. The worker assumed Kryger was just a transient who lived in the bushes and thought nothing of the interaction until he saw a missing person report on TV news Thursday evening, Plageman said.

After the news report, the worker called the Sheriff's Office and reported the sighting. The DOT work crew returned to the site Friday morning and found Kryger and his campsite. The man was dirty, but appeared to be OK. He was taken to a hospital to be checked out and is back in the custody of his care provider, Plageman said.

Chualar is south of Salinas on Highway 101. Kryger doesn't drive, have access to money or ride the bus, so it's unclear how he traveled such a distance so quickly.

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- A developmentally disabled Corralitos man who disappeared from a dependent care home in late December has been found and appears to be OK, the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office said.

Ted Kryger, 49, was last seen on Dec. 28 and his disappearance had prompted concern about his well-being.

A Department of Transportation supervisor who saw a news report on KSBW this week about Kryger's disappearance said he saw a man matching Kryger's description helping pick up trash along Highway 101 near Chualar on Dec. 29.

Crews went back to the area along the highway on Friday and found Kryger in the brush. They said he was dirty but appeared to be otherwise fine.

Deputies took him to a hospital to be checked out.
