MESQUITE - A family and the Mesquite police are searching for an 18-year-old mentally challenged teen who went missing Monday night.

Nelson Velasquez cannot hear or speak, which his family said adds to their fears since they said he wouldn't be able to reach out for help.

Family, friends and police have searched for the teen at his favorite park and his friends' homes, and a police chopper has searched by air.

The North Mesquite High School freshman moved to North Texas from Honduras two years ago to live with his aunt and uncle.

His family said they returned home Monday night to find no sign of the teen.

"That's his keys," said Samira Rosas, Velasquez's aunt, while pointing out his personal items that were found still inside the home. "This is his binder from school."

Rosas said while his things were still inside the house, she said the doors were locked from the inside.

"I don't think he would actually know how to ask for help unless people knew sign language," Rosas said. "He wouldn't be able to communicate."

Though Velasquez may have trouble communicating, Rosas said he should be carrying help.

"He has a business card with his information, his address, school information [and] my mother's information," she said.

Velasquez is 5'5, 120 lbs. and was last seen wearing a pair of jeans and a blue-hooded sweatshirt.

"He's kind of like my son," Rosas said. "I've had him all this time."

Those who may have answers or seen Velasquez are asked to call the Mesquite Police Department.
