A 48-year-old Chandler woman was arrested Tuesday and charged with 2nd degree murder in the death of a 2-year-old girl.
On November 5, 2008, officers responded to the report of an unresponsive child at Colorful Kids Preschool near Ray and Rural roads where Candelaria Bradford was employed.
Selenia Moreno was transported to a local hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
Investigators determined that Bradford leaned on the child while she was face down, which caused her to stop breathing.
Bradford told police the toddler was whining during naptime and that she kept lifting up. The suspect said she rested her knee over Moreno's buttock to keep her from raising up, according to court documents.
According to the report, another employee reported seeing Bradford sitting next to the child with her "elbow and forearm across the back of Moreno's head, neck and upper shoulders, leaning on Moreno.
A medical examination indicated Moreno's death was "homicidal asphyxia."
"It's shocking, but I trust the people who work there," said Aleisha Martinez who brought her baby to the daycare Wednesday morning. "I've never had a problem."
Police told ABC15 News Moreno had been living with a foster family and was just days away from being adopted at the time of her death.
The little girl had attended the daycare for about a year, according to officers.
Police said there is no connection between the child's biological mother and Bradford.
