ELKHART — Police are looking for a missing man they say may have been shot before being driven away in a vehicle.

Kevin K. Pendleton, 30, of Elkhart, left his apartment in the 300 block of Chapman Avenue about 1 a.m. Thursday to talk to an unknown person in a black vehicle, the man’s 28-year-old girlfriend told police. The girlfriend said when Pendleton was in the car, she heard gunshots and saw bright flashes.

The vehicle then left the area with Pendleton inside, police said. Officers were able to locate additional witnesses who also said they heard shots and observed flashes inside the car.

The vehicle was described as a black four-door, possibly a Nissan Maxima or Altima.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Elkhart Police Department at (574) 295-7070, the homicide tip line at (574) 389-4770 or Crime Stoppers at (574) 288-STOP.

Not long ago there was another missing person from Elkhart. She was found deceased in New Buffalo.

Talking to an unknown friend makes me wonder if this was a set up of some kind.

ELKHART — Investigators are searching for clues after finding two men dead inside a car on Elkhart's south side. Police found the black Nissan parked in the 1300 block of Leonard Street late Thursday afternoon. They believe the mens' deaths may be connected to an earlier shooting several miles away.

That shooting occurred outside a Washington Gardens apartment in the 300 block of Chapman Street around 1 a.m. Thursday. Police say several witnesses reported hearing gunshots, and at least one saw what she believed to "muzzle flashes."

Police had still not positively identified the dead men as of late Thursday evening, but they believe one of the victims is Kevin K. Pendleton, 30, who was last seen leaving his apartment at Washington Gardens to talk to two unknown men in a black vehicle.

Pendleton’s 28-year-old girlfriend told police that when Pendleton was in the car, she heard gunshots and saw bright flashes.

"We had an altercation between 3-4 males. Shots were fired. People heard the shots. A lot of people seen a lot of things going on inside this vehicle. And, then the vehicle leaves the area," said Elkhart Police Lt. Ed Windbigler.

By early morning, family members and friends of Pendleton had filed a "missing persons" report, fearing the worst.

"Somebody took him in a car. We don't know where he's at," said Pendleton's friend Marlon Young.

Homicide detectives searched the Elkhart County landfill after receiving tips from "multiple people" that the missing man was there.

That search was quickly called off late in the afternoon, as investigators roped off another crime scene on Leonard Street. Police say a car parked on the south side of the road matched the description of the car Pendleton was seen in outside his apartment.

Lt. Windbigler says one of the victims also matches Pendleton's description.

"We believe it's all connected," he said.

Police had not positively identified either victim late Thursday, and said it could be hours before names were officially released, pending notification of family members.

Even so, some of Pendleton's family and friends stood in the bitter cold temperatures on Leonard Street as police snapped crime scene photos, and dusted for prints.

Several family members, who asked to remain anonymous out of fear for their own safety, say they have no doubt Pendleton's body is in the car.

"I've seen him several times in that vehicle. So, I'm pretty positive that's him," said one man who identified himself as Pendleton's cousin.

"That's him, yeah. That's him," said another relative, who declined to identify her relation to Pendleton.

Pendleton has a lengthy criminal history, including convictions for handgun violations. He's also listed as a registered sex offender.

But friends and family say he was turning things around.

"He'd been in and out of jail," said Pendleton's cousin. "But he got out the last time and wanted to change his life around. He was doing all the right things."

As for the other victim?

Neighbors living on Leonard street say they recognize the car, but don't know who it belongs to.

"I have seen it there before," said Charlotte Norman, who lives a few doors down from where the car was found. "I thought I'd seen it parked there for the last two days. Every time I passed by, it was there. But it was plowed under the car, and there's no snow up around it. So, it must have been moved."

"The house it's in front of is a rental house, and it hasn't been used in probably over two years," said Charlotte's husband Robert Norman.

Both said they hadn't heard or seen anything strange overnight.

Sandra Cockerham hadn't either.

"Nothing. Nothing," she said when asked the same question. "But the neighborhood has been getting worse. We have to watch out for each other now," she said.

Now, neighbors, friends and family have mirroring thoughts, as they pray for answers and justice.

"He got kids out here, and it's sad that his child won't be able to see his dad no more. I hope there's justice for his kid's sake," said the woman.

Police are searching for Shawn Palmer, 28, who they consider a "person of interest" in connection with the case. Investigators say Palmer also goes by the name "Tony Perry," and should be considered armed and dangerous.

Police describe Palmer as a black male, 5'8", 170 lbs, with black hair, and brown eyes. He is the registered owner of a black, 2002 Chevrolet Malibu with the license plate LO6853.
.
Police also hope autopsies on both victims preliminarily scheduled for Friday will help provide them with some new clues to explain how the men died.

Police identify two men found dead in car in Elkhart
Missing man was shot to death, police say; autopsy not finished on other victim

ELKHART — Police have identified the two men found dead in a car west of downtown Thursday afternoon.

Kevin K. Pendleton, 30, and John J. Williams, 26, both of Elkhart, were found about 2:30 p.m. in the 1300 block of Leonard Street.

Pendleton’s death has been ruled a homicide, police said. He died from a gunshot wound, an autopsy revealed today. The autopsy on Williams had not been completed as of 2:30 p.m. today.

Meanwhile, police are still looking for 28-year-old Shawn C. Palmer of Elkhart, who they describe as a "person of interest" in the case. Palmer, police said, should be considered armed and dangerous.

Pendleton was reported missing Thursday morning. His girlfriend and other witnesses told police he got into a black car about 1 a.m. Thursday in the 300 block of Chapman Avenue to talk to two men he knew.

Pendleton’s girlfriend and other witnesses said they heard gunshots and saw flashes coming from the car. The car then drove away with Pendleton inside.

The Elkhart Police Department Homicide Unit searched all day Thursday for the man, fearing he might have been killed and dumped somewhere, they said. That led them to the landfill on County Road 7, where they came up empty.

Windbigler said Thursday the car found on Leonard appears to match the description of the car Pendleton got into earlier that morning.

Palmer owns a 2002 black four-door Chevrolet Malibu, which might match the description of the car recovered on Leonard, police said.

He had not been found as of 2:30 p.m. today, Windbigler said.

ELKHART-- There hasn't been a January homicide in the city of Elkhart since 2003 -- until now, only 15 days into the new year.

The bodies of two men, 30-year-old Kevin K. Pendleton and 26-year-old John J. Williams, were discovered in a car in the 1300 block of Leonard Street on Thursday afternoon.

The investigation began when Pendleton's girlfriend reported him missing around 1 a.m. Thursday.

She told police he left her apartment in the 300 block of Chapman Avenue to talk with a person in a black car.

After he got into the car, she told police, she heard gunshots and saw bright flashes before the car left with Pendleton inside.

The car was discovered about a mile away from the Chapman Avenue address by Elkhart homicide detectives at 2:30 p.m. Thursday.

Police are looking for a person of interest, 28-year-old Shawn Cornelius Palmer.

Palmer, who also goes by the alias Tony Perry, is a black man with black hair and brown eyes, 5-feet-8 inches tall and about 170 pounds.

He should be considered armed and dangerous, according to police.
