Decomposed female body found in Yakima River near Prosser

Yakima Herald-Republic

PROSSER, Wash. -- Authorities are working to identify a badly decomposed body pulled from the Yakima River just west of town.

The body, a female about 5 feet tall, was discovered along the south side of the river sometime before 5 p.m. Thursday in the river near Richards and Byron roads, according to the Benton County Sheriff's Office.

The body was covered in mud and clothed from the waist down, deputies said. There were no obvious signs of injury.

An autopsy is scheduled for Saturday, said Benton County Deputy Coroner Michelle Jenack.

Sunnyside police have been looking for a 14-year-old girl who was reported missing in October after attending a party in Outlook, authorities said.

But there is no indication at this time that the body in the river may be the missing girl, Sunnyside Police Chief Ed Radder said.

"I just know that there was a body recovered, but identification won't be made until tomorrow," he said. "We with other agencies have been looking at missing persons reports."

Benton County seeks help to ID body

Saturday, Feb. 07, 2009
By Joe Chapman, Herald staff writer

Benton County officials are investigating whether any missing persons reports can help indentify a dead woman who was pulled from the Yakima River on Thursday.

An autopsy to be performed today also could provide insights into her identity and how she died.

"At this point in time, we're not guessing anything," said Benton County sheriff's Lt. Joe Lusignan. "We're waiting until we get a little bit more concrete information, and hopefully some of that will come at the autopsy."

Investigators assume the woman's body came from upriver and floated down, possibly from Yakima County. They're checking missing persons reports from Valley police departments and sheriff's offices.

The Benton County Sheriff's Office doesn't have any reports of missing persons who could be the dead woman, Lusignan said.

She was found in the river about 3:20 p.m. Thursday along Byron Road near Richards Road. She was about 5 feet tall and was clothed from the waist down, with no identification.

The body was decomposed enough that she may have been in the water for 30 days or longer, Lusignan said. There were no obvious signs of injury but officials are investigating the death as suspicious at this point, Lusignan said.

"It could be somebody fell in off their home dock or it could be something nefarious," he said

Body Found in Yakima River Identified

Updated: Feb 7, 2009 09:29 PM EST

PROSSER, Wash-- Police have been searching for 14-year-old Francisca Hernandez Ramirez for over three months. Today that search is over.

Police officers had been searching for Ramirez since she was last seen in late October. Officials originally described her as a runaway, then said she could be in danger.

The Benton County Coroner says the body was in the water for an extended period of time. It is unknown exactly how long, but it is believed to be upwards of a month.

As for the exact cause and date of her death, that remains under investigation. What we do know is her death is not from an accidental drowning.

"The cause of death was not natural causes, nor was it accidental drowning," says Benton County Coroner Rick Corson. "The Yakima County Sheriff's Department and the Sunnyside Police Department are now investigating the death."

Police say body in Yakima River was missing teen

Sunday, Feb. 08, 2009
By Paula Horton, Herald staff writer

A body found earlier this week in the Yakima River near Prosser was that of a 15-year-old Sunnyside girl missing since October, authorities said Saturday.

Francisca "Vanessa" Hernandez Ramirez's death is being investigated by the Yakima County Sheriff's Office, although no details were released Saturday.

Benton County Coroner Rick Corson said he could not release the manner of death because he did not want to impede the investigation.

He did say, however, that the "cause is not of natural causes nor is it accidental drowning."

An autopsy was completed Saturday by forensic pathologist Dr. Jeffery Reynolds of Yakima. Detectives with the Benton County and Yakima County sheriff's offices attended the autopsy.

Ramirez's body was in the water for more than 30 days, but authorities are unsure for how long, Corson said.

The body was found Thursday afternoon along Byron Road near Richards Road when a nearby property owner saw it about 10 feet from a dock. It had no obvious signs of injury, but was clothed only from the waist down.

Ramirez was last seen Oct. 20. She was initially reported as a runaway in early November, with witnesses reportedly seeing her in the Sunnyside, Outlook and Pasco areas.

By mid-November, Sunnyside police listed her as an endangered missing person and named an 18-year-old Outlook man as a "person of interest" in her disappearance.

Sunnyside police spokeswoman Charlotte Hinderlider said she could not say whether Miguel Flores still was being sought in connection with the disappearance.

She said Sunnyside's missing person case was closed, and referred calls about the investigation to the Yakima County Sheriff's Office.

Dispatchers at the sheriff's office said no information was being released Saturday.

Ramirez, who was 14 when she was last seen, had been listed as a missing and endangered person with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. She was one of 72 children reported missing from Washington.

Sunnyside police conducted an exhaustive three-month investigation into Ramirez's disappearance, Hinderlider said.

Agencies that assisted in the search include the Pasco Police Department, Yakima County and Benton County sheriff's offices, Roza Irrigation District, Sunnyside Valley Irrigation District, Yakima County Search and Rescue, FBI, Port of Seattle Police Department, and a private King County firm called VideoRay.

I was looking for a missing girl that could have fit the description but her poster threw me off. It says she is 15 and last seen at home.

Family of Girl Found in Yakima River Speaks

SUNNYSIDE, Wash-- It was a quiet gathering for friends and family of Francisca Ramirez on Sunday. The 14-year-old had been missing since late October. Police called it a runaway. News of her death is a shock to the family.

"We had hopes maybe she had just left and was going to come back," says Ramirez's sister-in-law Marbylyn Torres. "We just can't believe it. It's like a dream, I don't really know how to explain."

Ramirez's body was pulled from the Yakima River on Thursday, when a Prosser family spotted it near their dock. Investigators aren't saying how long her body was in the water, except that it was an extended period of time. The Benton County Coroner says Francisca's death was not accidental. Now the family is saying they don't think she ever ran away.

"She was happy where she was with her mom," says Torres. "Her mom and her were good friends, so I don't think she would runaway."

The Ramirez family has seen tragedy before. Just two months ago, Francisca's older brother Pedro died.

"They just lost someone recently, and now to lose someone else."

Now the family is left asking questions as the Yakima Sheriff's Office does its part to piece together the puzzle.

"She was a happy person. She was a nice girl."

Officials call Sunnyside girl's death a homicide

By ROSS COURTNEY
Yakima Herald-Republic

SUNNYSIDE -- Francisca Ramirez Hernandez was remembered Monday as a typical eighth-grade student with many friends at Harrison Middle School.
Before disappearing last October, the then-14-year-old had been in a college-readiness program known as GEAR UP, said Principal Juanita Hernandez, who is not related.
The principal reported the mood was somber at the school, where some grieving students were taking advantage of extra counseling.
For months, investigators had feared foul play in the girl's disappearance. Her body was found last week on the banks of the Yakima River near Prosser.
On Monday, authorities termed her death a homicide -- a possibility that detectives had suspected when they first began investigating her disappearance.
Yakima County sheriff's detectives said they have a suspect in mind, but an arrest has not been made.
Hernandez had been missing since Oct. 20, when her parents reported her as a runaway to the Sunnyside Police Department.
At the time, Sunnyside police received information that the girl had last been seen at a party in the Outlook area, said Stew Graham, the sheriff's chief of detectives.
Sunnyside detectives also heard she had been killed after leaving the party and that her body had been dumped in an irrigation canal, Graham said.
In November, Yakima County sheriff's deputies also began working on the case, exploring the possibility of a homicide, Graham said.
"We couldn't verify (she'd been killed) in any way," Graham said.
She would have turned 15 on Dec. 23, although Graham said investigators believe she died before then.
Also Monday, Benton County Coroner Rick Corson turned over pathology reports to the Yakima County Coroner's Office.
Corson would not confirm a cause of death, though he has ruled out natural causes and accidental drowning.
Graham also would not reveal the cause of death.
"It's not anything anybody else really needs to know at this point in time," Graham said.
After the family reported the girl missing, Sunnyside police posted fliers in local schools, said Charlotte Hinderlider, department spokeswoman. Then, on Nov. 10, they issued a news release about her. That initial police release as well as subsequent ones transposed her middle and last names and identified her as Francisca Hernandez Ramirez.
Police typically don't immediately release information about runaways because they often return on their own. Seeing their picture in the paper sometimes pushes them further away from their families, Hinderlider said.
Then, in late November, police said they were looking for an 18-year-old Sunnyside man as a person of interest and that Hernandez might be in danger. Detectives have since spoken to him, Hinderlider said.
Detectives also interviewed many middle school students who knew only half-truths about Hernandez.
"When you run into an investigation involving middle schoolers, you're dealing with rumor mixed with fact," Hinderlider said.
Graham agreed Sunnyside officers did everything they could to find Hernandez, even borrowing underwater equipment from the Puget Sound area to check canals.
"These guys just did an outstanding job following up, exhausting every lead that came their way," he said.
It is the third time in the past 18 months the body of a teenage girl has been found in Yakima County.
In July, the body of 17-year-old Jaqueline Abundez of Grandview was found floating in a Lower Valley canal with shotgun wounds to her chest. She also had been reported missing to police.
In September 2007, the charred body of Jaleeza Lobdell, 14, of Tacoma was found in an orchard near Moxee. Detectives suspect she may have died of a drug overdose.
Police are not suggesting the cases are linked in any way.

CRIME: Sunnyside girl was stabbed before dumped in river

Sunnyside A Sunnyside teen found in the river near Prosser last week likely was killed in October, around the time she went missing, said Benton County Coroner Rick Corson.

Francisca Hernandez Ramirez was stabbed in the neck and bled to death, authorities said.

The 14-year-old was then apparently dumped in the water. She was reported missing Oct. 20, and investigators suspect that’s about when she went in the water, Corson said.

The teen’s body was found Feb. 5, in the Yakima River near Prosser. She would have turned 15 in December. The Yakima County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the homicide.

A sheriff’s detective began working the missing person’s case with Sunnyside police investigators in November.

Sunnyside detectives had been told Ramirez was last seen at a party in Outlook, that she was killed when they left the party and her body wad dumped in an irrigation canal, the sheriff’s office said.

Sunnyside teen died from knife wound, coroner says

Francisca Ramirez Hernandez bled to death from a knife wound to her neck, according to the Yakima County coroner.

Her body was found Feb. 6 on the banks of the Yakima River near Prosser. A student at Sunnyside’s Harrison Middle School, Hernandez had been missing since Oct. 20, when her parents reported her as a runaway.

She would have turned 15 on Dec. 23.

Yakima County Coroner Maury Rice said Friday he believes she had been in the river since October but could not give a more precise time of death.

Months before her body turned up, authorities in Benton County and in Sunnyside suspected she might have been killed. The Yakima County Sheriff’s Office began investigating her disappearance as a possible homicide in November.

Her death was ruled a homicide on Monday.

She was last seen at a party in the Outlook area, according to the sheriff’s office.

Hernandez was the third teenage girl to be found dead in the Yakima Valley in the past 18 months.

Jaqueline Abundez, 17, of Grandview was found in a Lower Valley canal in July with shotgun wounds to her chest. And Tacoma 14-year-old Jaleeza Lobdell was found in an orchard near Moxee in September 2007. Detectives suspect Lobdell died of a drug overdose, although at the time Rice said the death was caused by thermal burns and pulmonary edema.

Police do not believe the cases are related.

Arrest in Francisca Hernandez-Ramirez Murder

Story Published: Nov 24, 2009 at 5:41 PM PST
Yakima - There was an arrest this week in the murder of a 14 year old Sunnyside girl.

Francisca Hernandez-Ramirez disappeared last October. Her parents say she went to a party and never came home. Her body was found near Prosser in the Yakima River in February. Cops had a suspect in mind, 22 year old Jesus Perales, but he fled to California.

" The information we have going back to spring of this year, it wasn't until late last week that detectives with the violent crimes task force, working on another matter, developed information that indicated the suspect had returned to the Yakima Valley," said Stew Graham with the Yakima Sheriff's Office.

Perales was arrested Tuesday. His prelimary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
