Anderson County Stops Search For Missing Woman From Charleston ( video at link) Published: July 22, 2009 Update 2:10pm Anderson County Sheriff’s office has called off the search after divers found nothing in the water. The Charleston Police are now headed home. Update 1:00pm Searchers have finished searching on the ground and in the woods.. A cadaver dog “alerted” on a dock at a house in a gated community and divers are going to be searching the water in this area. If they don’t find anything, they will call off the search. The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office is searching for a missing woman from Charleston. The search Wednesday afternoon is at Highway 24 at the Seneca River. The Sheriff says a tip led them to this point in Anderson County. At this point they are just investigating the tip. The tip was in regards to a woman from Charleston who has been missing since June 12. She is 28-year-old Katherine Waring. According to a police report, Waring previously told her father about receiving a text which said, “if you caused this to happen you will be the first to die.“ Another text told her when she came home and what she was wearing to imply someone was watching her. It’s not known who sent those text messages. Our sister station in Charleston reports that the Charleston City Police Department does not suspect foul play. ANDERSON, S.C. -- The Anderson County Sheriff's Office and Charleston City Police spent hours searching for a missing woman Wednesday. ![]() Katherine Waring They were searching an area near Highway 24 and the Seneca River in Anderson County, but they called off the search around 2:00 p.m. because they didn't find anything substantial, officials said. The search was based on a tip in the disappearance of 28-year-old Katherine Waring of Charleston. She was last seen Friday, June 12, and police said at the time, she could be headed toward Greenville. Charleston police said they do not believe Waring was driving a vehicle herself, but they said someone other than her, driving a silver Chevrolet Malibu, tried to cash one of her checks at a Charleston area bank. ![]() Sky 4 was overhead as investigators serached for Katherine Warring, missing from Charleston since June 12. The car was believed to have Georgia license plates. Anderson County sheriff's Sgt. Andy Tribble said the tip given to Waring's family was not where to find Waring, but where to find her body. He said, "All I know is a friend of the family had this info via e-mail and it was pretty descriptive in this area. You can read it and get right to where we are. So being as specific as it was, we wanted to come check it out." Family member fear something is seriously wrong with Waring because she is not answering her cell phone and her normal daily calls home have stopped. Investigators said aside from the tip, they don't have any clues to Waring's whereabouts. The Index-Journal reported Waring is the granddaughter of Greenwood's Josephine Abney. The Index-Journal also reported Waring's father said she had recently received threatening and cryptic text messages, including one that said “If you caused this to happen, you will be the first to die”. Another made reference to what she was wearing when she arrived home one night. Anyone with information on this case is asked to call the Anderson County Sheriff's Office or the Charleston City Police. |

Rural area searched for missing woman
Thursday, July 23, 2009 Authorities searched rural Anderson County this week for a missing Charleston woman. Charleston police received a tip Tuesday that the body of Katherine Waring might be along the banks of the Seneca River, said Charles Francis, the department's public information officer. Anderson County sheriff's deputies searched the area with dogs and a helicopter and ended their search Wednesday afternoon, said Deputy Chief Keith Smith. He said it appeared they received bad information. Charleston police have an investigator in Anderson County assisting with the search. Waring, 28, was last seen June 12. Police had information that she may be headed to Greenville. She was not believed to be driving a vehicle. Police reported that someone other than Waring, in a silver Chevrolet Malibu, had tried to cash one of her checks at a local bank June 15. The car was thought to have Georgia license plates. Her family reported her missing that same day. To provide information on Waring's whereabouts, call Charleston police at 577-7434 or Crime Stoppers at 554-1111. http://www.postandcourier.com/news/2...missing_woman/

Search at Lake Hartwell fails to find Charleston woman By Rick Spruill (Contact) Wednesday, July 22, 2009 Photo by Sefton IpockRyan Herring walks Kasey through the woods along S.C. 24 in Anderson Wednesday as the search for a missing Charleston woman comes to an end. Officials searched an area of Hartwell Lake and nearby shoreline but did not find the woman. Photo by Sefton IpockAnderson County officials including two members of the dive team end the investigation of a dock in Lake Hartwell near S.C. 24 Wednesday. Investigators acting on a tip searched the area for a Charleston woman missing since June but did not find her. ANDERSON — Dive teams and cadaver dogs failed Wednesday to find the body of a missing Charleston woman in or around Hartwell Lake near Townville. Anderson County Sheriff John Skipper said the search began Wednesday morning after the Charleston Police Department received an anonymous tip that the body of Katherine Peronneau Waring, 28, was in or near the lake. Investigators from the Charleston Police Department assisted in the search. Charles Francis, public information officer for the Charleston Police Department, said Waring was reported missing June 15 by her father, Thomas Waring of Charleston. Thomas Waring is a prominent attorney and a member of the family that owns The Post and Courier newspaper in Charleston. By mid-morning Wednesday, a command post had been established at Portman Shoals and investigators were searching in a gated community off Keowee Club Road, just off S.C. 24. Around 1 p.m., divers were in the water around a private dock a quarter-mile south of the S.C. 24 bridge. Sgt. Andy Tribble of the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office said the divers were called in when cadaver dogs “showed interest” in an area around the dock, but the search was called off around 2 p.m. Waring is described as 5 feet 10 inches tall with auburn hair and blue eyes. She was last seen June 12 in downtown Charleston, according to the Web site www.helpfindthemissing.org. People with information on where she is are asked to call the Charleston Police Department at (843) 577-7434 or Charleston Crime Stoppers at (843) 554-1111. |

July 23, 2009 Anderson County search for 'prominent' Charleston woman called off By John C. Stevenson and Paul Alongi STAFF WRITERS Dozens of Anderson County deputies and rescuers searched a wooded area around the Seneca River arm of Lake Hartwell on Wednesday for a missing Charleston woman, calling it off after about five hours without finding any trace of her. Katherine Waring's father told Charleston police that he had last heard from his daughter on June 12, according to an incident report. He told police that three days later, a man tried to cash one of his daughter's personal checks for $4,500, an officer wrote in the report. The search of a square-mile area in Anderson County began about 9 a.m. after authorities received a tip from a friend of the Waring family that the 28-year-old woman might be in the area, said Anderson County sheriff's Sgt. Andy Tribble. Charleston police Investigator Kelly Stone said Waring is part of a “prominent' Charleston family. Tribble said she has no known ties to Anderson County. Authorities based the search out of a mobile command center at State 24 and Keowee Club Road near Townville. Waring has red hair and blue eyes and is 5 feet 10 inches tall and 128 pounds, police said. She has a tattoo of an Egyptian god on the small of her back, police said. Staff writer Paul Alongi can be reached at 864-298-4746. |

My husband and I felt strongly that we saw Katherine on July 21 in Greenville Co, then next day her picture was on the news. We BOTH were shocked that was a woman we had been face to face with the night before. I remember vividly the details of a dress this person was wearing but do not want to give false hope to her friends and family. It took the Charleston police 7 days to contact us. The woman in question was not distressed, carried herself very well and in an out of the way place to be dressed as she was. We did have a description of a car but no tag. I feel for the family and friends but can't get this off my mind as to what I saw. Because of the location and dress of this female, she was an "out-of-town" person, very strange siting. I would only hope that if I was in the situation and a tip had been called in with TWO people, a police department would not wait 7 days to return the call!!!
