Default Abade “Abe” Martinez, 52, [BODY FOUND] Missing 8/2/09, Montrose, CO

Published/Last Modified on Sunday, September 20, 2009 4:12 AM MDT

MONTROSE — As the days pass, Abe Martinez’s family is pinning up signs — and pinning its hopes on public awareness.

Abade “Abe” Martinez, 52, has been missing from the Olathe home of a relative since Aug. 2.

His brother and brother’s girlfriend found Martinez’s hat and cigarettes — items his sisters said he would take with him everywhere — at their house on 58.25 Road, but neither they, nor a massive search by the Montrose County Sheriff’s Office, were able to find the missing man.

“We still haven’t given up,” Martinez’s sister, Victoria Martinez, said. “We won’t give up until we find him.”

She said investigators are searching the area near where Abe was last seen and there is talk of another ground search.

The family, however, searches every day, marking their path with color flyers of Abe and yellow ribbons.

“We made a track from where he went missing, all the way to his home in Montrose (on South 12th Street),” Victoria said. “We went the route he always walked. It’s his frequently traveled path. ... We look and we re-look.”

The family recently listed Abe with the CUE Center for Missing Persons, based in North Carolina.

The nonprofit’s mission is to join efforts with all people involved in a missing persons case to search for the missing.

Victoria Martinez described her brother as a loving and generous man, from a family of nine children, all of whom grew up in Ridgway. Abe loves spending time with his family, and is very proud of his 2-year-old granddaughter, Victoria said.

He also is a skilled construction worker.

“He could cut a board without measuring it and it would be exact. He is a very skillful man,” his sister said.

Now his beloved family is in limbo — searching for any clue, praying for any news, and, so far, receiving neither.

“We want to hear something good or bad. He could be anywhere. There’s nothing but fields and orchards and ditches and canals that surround the whole area,” Victoria said. “There’s still many factors. It’s a very difficult thing to deal with.”

Abe Martinez is 5-feet, 7-inches tall, 130 pounds, dark hair with salt-and-pepper highlights, was clean-shaven at the time of his disappearance, and has brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a gray T-shirt and blue jeans.

Contact the Montrose County Sheriff’s Office at 252-4010, or your nearest law enforcement agency with any information.

Body found in canal: No ID yet

February 16, 2010 11:07 AM MST

DELTA - A body found yesterday in a Delta canal could be that of missing Montrose man Abade "Abe" Martinez, though authorities are still awaiting autopsy results.

"We're unable to identify whether the body is male or female," Delta County Undersheriff Mark Taylor said. "As soon as we have word from the pathologist, we can start looking at any missing persons we have in the area."

A ditch rider found the body yesterday afternoon, in a dried-out section of the FN lateral canal, just inside Delta County.

The lateral comes off of the Ironstone canal, which was the focus of massive searches for Martinez last summer and fall.

Montrose County Sheriff Rick Dunlap said Matinez's family has been notified that a body was found.

"At this point, we're not sure of anything," he said. "The only thing that we can be certain of is that the body would be in the same general location" as where Martinez went missing.

Martinez, 52, was last seen Aug. 2, 2009, at his brother's Olathe residence. His family reported him missing immediately, and began scouring the area from Olathe to Montrose, where Martinez had an apartment. The Montrose County Sheriff's Office also conducted massive searches, including a community-wide search in November, with the help of volunteers, who searched canals.

"If it is Mr. Martinez, it will bring some closure for the family," Dunlap said.

Taylor said the body was turned over to the Delta County coroner, and is now awaiting autopsy in Montrose.

He said "there was nothing" that allowed Delta and Montrose investigators to determine whether foul play was involved, and because of the advanced state of decomposition, it wasn't clear whether the deceased had been injured.

Coroner: Body found in canal that of Abe Martinez

DELTA and MONTROSE COUNTIES, COLO. (KKCO) - The Montrose County Coroner has positively identified human remains found in a canal Monday afternoon.

The Coroner says the body is that of 52-year-old Abe Martinez. His family has been notified.

Officials with the Montrose County Sheriff's Office say the body was found Monday afternoon in a dried out section of the FJ Lateral Canal. The remains were found by a ditch rider who was inspecting canals and preparing for spring runoff.

Martinez was last seen in Aug. 2009 near the area.
