Found bones are 3 women

Cops digging for more remains

Created On: Monday, 09 Feb 2009, 9:39 PM MST

ALBUQUERQUE - The search for human remains at a West Mesa construction site yielded the bones of three women and a deepening mystery for Albuquerque police.

The search began after a woman walking her dog found a single bone outside a subdivision construction site on Sen. Dennis Chavez Boulevard SW near 118th Street. It turned out to be the bone of a woman, and after a week of police work, investigators now say they now have the remains of three women.

The bones of two have been scattered throughout 100 acres of land graded and ready to be developed.

The remains of a third were found in a shallow grave, and dental records have identified her as an Albuquerque woman missing since 2003, according to police. Her name has not been released as investigators attempt to contact her family.

Police said it is too soon to suggest that the bones are the remains of three female victims of a serial killer. It's even too soon to use the word murder, as investigators have not determined the cause of deaths.

"We've come to believe this was the same individual who placed all these remains in this same area," Albuquerque Police Chief Ray Schultz said. ?That's what we believe right now.?

Before new homes and a high school lined the West Mesa neighborhood, the land was remote desert crisscrossed by a few dirt roads. Schultz said the person who buried the women there knew the area before development.

Investigators plan a major excavation of the area to determine if additional remains are there.

Albuquerque police identify

Associated Press - February 10, 2009 3:55 PM ET

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Albuquerque police have identified a woman whose bones were found on the city's west side, but the identity of 2 other sets of bones remains unidentified Tuesday.

Police spokesman John Walsh says Victoria Chavez would have turned 28 this year. Police say she was last seen in 2003 and was reported missing in 2004.

Detectives believe her body was dumped on the mesa around that time.

They also believe her body and those of 2 others found by hikers a week ago were dumped on the mesa by the same person.

Police are now doing a foot-by-foot search of 100 acres on the mesa, using dogs that can uncover cadavers. The search is expected to take two months.

Woman disappeared in 2003

Updated: Tuesday, 10 Feb 2009, 6:45 PM MST
Published : Tuesday, 10 Feb 2009, 5:19 PM MST

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Albuquerque police on Wednesday released the name of one of the three women whose bones were found on the West Mesa.

The woman was Victoria Chavez who would have turned 30 this year.

Chavez was last seen in June 2003 and was reported missing by her mother nine months later.

The mother told police her daughter was a known drug user and prostitute. Because of that lifestyle the mother thought maybe she was just somewhere on the streets.

However but after months of not hearing from her she knew something was wrong.

Chavez's skeletal remains were found last week after a woman walking her dog uncovered a human bone in an area of southwest Albuquerque recently cleared for development as a subdivision.

An intense search by cadaver dogs turned up Chavez's entire skeleton and two partial skeletons belonging to two other women. They still have not been identified.

The Albuquerque Police Department plans to excavate the entire area to find the rest of the remains and they believe there could be other bodies out there.

Police say they are comparing the skeletons to 24 missing person's cases in the Albuquerque area. Many of those women are prostitutes, but right now without knowing who the other two victims are they can't say if that is a common link.

Police are still not callings the deaths murder although that appears to be the most likely explanation.

Detectives also said they suspected a well-known pimp who recently died of killing prostitutes. They said there's no evidence linking him or anyone else to the West Mesa bodies.

Medical records of missing women sought

Two sets of bones unidentified

Updated: Wednesday, 11 Feb 2009, 9:42 PM MST
Published : Wednesday, 11 Feb 2009, 5:43 PM MST

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Investigators are reaching out to families of missing women in hopes medical and dental records can match names to two partial skeleton discovered on the West Mesa.

A third set of bones found at a construction site already have been identified as Victoria Chavez who was last seen in Albuquerque in 2003.

The mystery of who the woman were and what happened to them when a woman walking her dog discovered a single bone at the future subdivision near 118th street and Sen. Dennis Chavez Boulevard SW.

An intense search of the 100-acre crime scene by investigators, police cadets and cadaver dogs last week turned up Chavez's entire skeleton and the two partial skeletons.

Chavez was identified through dental records, according to the Office of the Medical Investigator.

Her mother told police Chavez was a known drug user and prostitute and said that because of that lifestyle she thought her daughter was just somewhere on the streets. But after months of not hearing from her the mother knew something was wrong.

Medical investigators trying to identify bones are asking the families of missing women to send the women's medical and dental records to OMI.

"There are many points of comparison that we can compare these to a missing person," forensic dentist Dr. Peter Loomis said. "We can use even a single tooth or single restoration if it's unique enough to make a positive comparison or positive identification."

If the remains are not identified DNA samples will be kept in a database waiting for any new information. Investigators said they are confident at some point the women's identities will be revealed.

OMI is still trying to determine how the three women died.

At this point, police aren't treating this as a murder investigation although they said it is likely the women were killed. Investigators continue to work the construction site searching for additional bodies.
