Family Of Missing SLO Man Speaks Out

Mark Mitchell Reporting
news@920kvec.com

San Luis Obispo -- The family of a missing San Luis Obispo man is speaking out and they're hoping someone knows something about their loved one. George Carpenter, 74-years-old, was reported missing on Wednesday. He was last seen driving his 1989 gray Jeep Comanche to Laguna Lake Park with his black labrador retriever.

This isn't this first time something like this has happened. Four years ago, he was gone for two days. He was found near the high-desert community of California City, disoriented and dehydrated. The license plate on that Jeep Comanche he drives reads: 3W27270.

If you have any information you are asked to call San Luis Obispo police.

No leads on 74-year-old missing for 6 days

A San Luis Obispo man with mild dementia remained missing six days after he took the family dog to a city park and didn’t return home.
George Carpenter, 74, was reported missing about 2 p.m. Wednesday, authorities said. He was last seen driving his 1989 Jeep Comanche to Laguna Lake Park with his black Labrador retriever, Scooter.
As each day passes, Dixie Carpenter, George Carpenter’s wife of 53 years, keeps vigil by the phone at their San Luis Obispo home, hoping that someone somewhere will find some sign of him.

Carpenter is described as an avid hiker in good physical shape with a passion for geology. He worked a number of years in law enforcement — retiring from the Morro Bay Police Department.
Neighbors, friends and family continue to help search areas Carpenter is known to have liked hiking with the family dog — including trails off Turri Road, the Irish Hills behind The Home Depot and the beach in Cayucos.
Police so far have not received tips about his whereabouts and the Jeep he was driving hasn’t been found, San Luis Obispo Lt. Tom DePriest said. A CHP helicopter flew over several rural areas in the county to help with the search, but it was unable to find his vehicle.
Carpenter’s credit card hasn’t been used since he disappeared, and he doesn’t carry a cell phone.
“We are really hoping that someone will read or hear the news and see his vehicle somewhere,” DePriest said. “We haven’t had any leads, and we are looking for that one phone call to help get us started.”
Law enforcement agencies statewide have been notified of the situation, DePriest said.
Dixie Carpenter said her husband didn’t say or do anything unusual on the day that he disappeared. She’d gone out to run a few errands, and when it got dark, she began to worry.
“Everything was as usual — there was nothing alerting me to be alarmed about anything, and I am pretty sensitive to such things,” Dixie Carpenter said.
George Carpenter takes medication for dementia and for a bipolar disorder and does not have his prescriptions with him. Without his medication, he is likely disoriented and bewildered.
“He is desperate at this point — confused and knowing that he needs help, but unable to help himself,” Dixie Carpenter said.
Some family and friends worry that George Carpenter may have tried to drive as far as Pershing County, Nev. — a place close to his heart because his son, who died in 2004, worked there for a number of years. He may have also tried to drive to Flagstaff, Ariz., to see his nephew, but left without any phone numbers or personal items.
Friends and authorities at both places were alerted to be on the lookout for him, said Tom Whiteford, a longtime family friend. Carpenter’s wife said that if he did leave the area, he was likely headed to the desert.
He disappeared once before, four years ago, and was found near the high-desert community of California City, disoriented and dehydrated, she said.
“He’s a native Californian and even from the time he was very young, the desert has always held a special allure to him,” Whiteford said.
Other local areas Carpenter enjoys hiking are Huasna, behind Lopez Lake or along Highway 1 between Cambria and Big Sur.
“He loses track of time, doesn’t bring food or water with him and easily gets lost in what he is doing,” said Beth Wonson, his daughter-in-law. “He could have fallen or the dog could have run off and he followed.”
Wonson said she struggles with trying to think of every possible scenario and is constantly searching for news headlines of any unidentified person found in all the places where he could be.
“He used to love to go up into the woods behind Lopez and drive the remote dirt roads and prided himself on knowing his way around the back country,” Wonson said. “We need every hiker and every mountain biker to be on the lookout.”

Search for missing 74-year-old San Luis Obispo man is scheduled for Friday

Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009

A ground search for missing San Luis Obispo man George Carpenter is being organized by his family to be held on Friday and possibly Saturday.

Organizers ask that volunteers meet at the Laguna Lake Park, the first parking lot near the entrance, at 9 a.m. People will be asked to work in pairs or groups. The search will include a 25-mile radius of San Luis Obispo County that will be divided among the volunteers. The county will be sectioned off and volunteers will be asked to drive through parking lots, rest areas, and campgrounds to look for Carpenter’s missing jeep and check with rangers and park attendants.

Volunteers are also asked to bring a snack and water in case they come across Carpenter or his missing black Labrador, Scooter.

Each team will be given fliers to hand out and hang up during the rounds. People will also be asked to provide a cell phone number at sign-in so that coordinators can communicate during the process.

Searchers are asked to call San Luis Obispo Police Department at 781-7317 immediately if they find anything they suspect might be related to Carpenter’s disappearance. For more information about Friday’s search, e-mail Beth Wonson at ewonson@gmail.com.

Carpenter was reported missing Dec. 23. He was last seen driving his 1989 Jeep Comanche to Laguna Lake Park with his black Labrador retriever, Scooter. He is described as a white man with gray hair and green eyes. He is about 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighs 170 pounds, police said. He was last seen wearing jeans, black shoes and a short-sleeved light-colored T-shirt.

His black Labrador retriever, Scooter, does not have a tail, and is wearing a black collar with Carpenter’s home phone number on the dog tag. His 1989 Jeep Comanche is grey/green with an off-white camper shell on back with license plate number 3w27270.

San Luis Obispo County Crime Stoppers is now offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to Carpenter’s location.

Just in case anyone comes across the recent article of a man's body discovered facedown in the tide pools of Shell Beach, it has been determined that the man is not George Carpenter.

That helps, Nut.

No sign of his vehicle yet. So sad.

San Luis Obispo -- SLO PD Captain Ian Parkinson says the lengthy disappearance of a local man is highly unusual because it’s such a high profile case.

74-year-old George Carpenter was last seen mid December driving his 1989 gray Jeep Comanche to Laguna Lake Park with his black Labrador retriever that’s missing a tail. Carpenter left with his credit card, but no charges have been made since his disappearance.

Carpenter exhibits mild symptoms of dementia and can lose his way in familiar places. He takes medication for the symptoms, but left home without them.

His family has organized extensive searches throughout the county, but none have yielded any results. They asked the sheriff’s department to search Laguna Lake, and no signs of the man were found there.

He has disappeared to the Tehachapi desert before. Police in that area have been notified.

Carpenter was last seen wearing jeans, black shoes, and a short sleeve t-shirt. The license plate on Carpenter’s Jeep Comanche reads: 3W27270. Crime Stoppers is offering a $1,000 reward for information that will help. Call Crimestoppers at 549-STOP or San Luis Obispo police at 781-7317 if you have any.

George Carpenter’s dog found alive near Gorda
January 22, 2010 12:27 pm

The dog of missing San Luis Obispo man George Carpenter has been found.

Scooter was found alive, near Gorda, on Highway 1 in Monterey County. Law enforcement officials are now concentrating their search for Carpenter in that area, despite heavy mud slides and poor weather conditions.

The dog will be returned to the Carpenter family.

Carpenter, 74, who suffers from dementia, has been missing since last December when he took his dog for a drive to Laguna Lake Park.

I wonder how far Gorda is from where they had searched for him. Glad they found his dog but I wish he had been with the dog.
