Missouri Mom About to Get Divorce Before Disappearing

Saturday, January 17, 2009

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,480425,00.html

Investigators collected blood evidence and carpet samples from the home of a missing Missouri mother, who was in the process of getting a divorce when she disappeared Jan. 2, according to a court affidavit released Friday.

Police found disposable latex gloves in a coat pocket and pants pockets with various stains on them when they searched the home of Renee Pernice Jan. 8, MyFOXKC.com reported.

They also discovered a reddish stain on the ceiling and a spot in the garage that tests showed was human blood, the station reported.

Renee Pernice's husband Shon Pernice has made inconsistent statements about when he last saw her, according to court documents.

Shon Pernice told his wife's relatives that he last saw her on New Year's Day, according to the affidavit, but told detectives several days later that he last saw her on Jan. 2.

The affidavit for a search warrant says Shon Pernice, an Independence firefighter, used an electronic keycard to enter the back door of the Independence hazmat station — where solvents and other cleaning materials are stored — at 4:26 a.m. Jan. 3, even though he was not assigned to that station.

Renee Pernice, a 35-year-old nursing instructor, has two sons and a stepdaughter and is not the kind of person who would separate herself from her children for any reason, family members have told police. Investigators believe she is a victim of foul play.

On Jan. 6, detectives saw Shon Pernice drive the family minivan to a park more than a mile away from his home, drop his wife's dog off and drive away. Detectives picked up the dog after Pernice did not return.

Shon Pernice's attorney, Kevin Baldwin, said he has instructed Pernice not to comment or allow police to interview him because Pernice believes he is being blamed for his wife's disappearance.

Police found Renee Pernice's cell phone on Jan. 3 in the northeast area of Kansas City, and on Monday dozens of volunteers searched a wooded area near the Pernice home.

According to a returned search warrant, investigators found a fake Navy Seal identification card with Shon Pernice's name and photograph when they searched the family's home, which Renee Pernice bought before she married Shon.

Investigators also removed from the home satellite equipment, an external thumb drive, a nursing notebook, a pineapple-style grenade with a hollowed-out bottom and a spent fuse.

Police said Shon Pernice, who is a member of the National Guard and has served with the Army in Iraq, was scheduled to leave for a three-week military session and then was planning to move out of the home.

Investigators interviewed the mother of Shon Pernice's daughter, who visited with her dad on Jan. 2. The woman told police that her daughter sent an e-mail around 9:30 p.m. telling her that she was ready to come home and was worried because Renee Pernice was not there.

The woman said she noticed the family van parked outside the home when she picked up her daughter from the Pernice home the next morning, the affidavit said. She said that was unusual because the van was always parked in the garage, police said.

Renee Pernice is described as white, 5 feet 9 inches tall and slender, with blue eyes and shoulder-length brown hair.

Missing Woman's Family Learns New Info
Family Says Woman's Husband Not Forthcoming

http://www.kmbc.com/mostpopular/18503874/detail.html

POSTED: 5:47 pm CST January 17, 2009

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A missing woman's family learns new details of an investigation into the disappearance of Renee Pernice became public.

KMBC 9's Peggy Breit reported that the newly released court documents indicate that Pernice's husband, Shon, brought her dog to her family's home, dropped it off and left within a few days of her disappearance.

"Yes, most assuredly there were things in there that we had not known of before," said Rick Pretz, Renee Pernice's father.

The first part of the investigation paperwork outlines why police wanted to search Renee Pernice's Northland home, and the second part contains what officials found, Breit said.

In addition to weapons and ammunition, investigators took swabs of possible blood stains from the garage and an ax, the ceiling and a mop.

The papers also outlined the disintegration of the couple's marriage. Renee Pernice's family knew the couple was about to divorce. On Jan. 1 or Jan. 2, Renee Pernice vanished from her home, but her purse and car were left behind. Shon has reportedly told two different stories about when he last saw her, Breit said.

Renee Pernice's family said they found everything in the documents disturbing. They're still focused on finding her, but their hopes that she's alive are nearly gone.

"It's very, very slim," said Linda Lockwood, Renee's mother.

Renee Pernice was so dedicated to her children, and her job as a nurse teaching other nurses, Breit said. More than two weeks since Renee Pernice disappeared, her relatives haven't been able to see the couple's two sons, who are now 6 and 8 years old.

"We continue to reach out and have an opportunity to visit with the children and that has not happened yet," Lockwood said.

They said Shon will not respond to their calls and that he also hasn't explained why he visited Independence Fire Station 5 at 4 a.m. -- hours before Renee Pernice was reported missing by her family. Shon is a firefighter paramedic at a different station.

The family said Saturday that no matter what you make of the information in the report, Renee Pernice remains missing.

"If they are questioning whether it's important or not, let the police determine if it is or it isn't and they can do that via the TIPS Hot line," said Lisa Mooney, Renee Pernice's sister.

If you have information regarding this investigation, contact the tips hot line by dialing 816-474-TIPS.

Neither Shon Pernice nor his lawyer responded to KMBC 9's efforts to speak with them.

Family of missing woman asks for clues
Published: Jan. 18, 2009 at 12:18 PM

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Jan. 18 (UPI) -- The family of a missing woman has asked residents of Kansas City, Mo., to come forward with any clues about her whereabouts.

Rick Pretz said Saturday he was desperately searching for clues regarding the disappearance of his 35-year-old daughter, Renee Pernice, The Kansas City (Mo.) Star reported.

"We don't want the public to relax and think their information won't be helpful to us," Pretz said.

Pretz praised police efforts to find his daughter, including a search warrant served last Friday at the home she shared with her husband Shon.

Pernice, according to documents, started divorce proceedings sometime around New Year's Day and has not been seen in at least two weeks, the Star reported.

Pretz was accompanied Saturday by Pernice's mother, Linda Lockwood, and one of their other daughters. The concerned father said his family remains confident someone ultimately will be charged in his daughter's disappearance.

"We're going to believe in the legal process," he said.

Prayer vigil held for Renee Pernice

Thursday, 15 January 2009 14:39
Kansas City residents concerned about the disappearance of Northlander Renee Pernice braved freezing temperatures Monday, Jan. 12, to let their voices be heard. A crowd of about 100 gathered around the J.C. Nichols fountain at 7 p.m. in Mill Creek Park, 47th Street and J.C. Nichols Parkway, on the Country Club Plaza. Caroline Veith, a former student of Pernice’s at Saint Luke’s Nursing College, organized the vigil.

“We’re going to get the word out,” said Veith, who graduated in May. “This has to stop. We need answers, and we need to find Renee. We will get answers. These crimes against women will stop, and we will get answers. We are a family; all of us together are a family because of Renee.”

Candles in hand, the crowd prayed together for Pernice’s safe return, led by Adam Hamilton, the pastor of Rick and Nancy Pretz, Pernice’s parents. After the prayer and a rendition of “Amazing Grace,” Rick Pretz thanked the crowd members for their support.

“As I see you out here, I’m at a loss for words,” he said. “The family very much appreciates your presence. We love Renee dearly, and we want to bring her home.”

Pernice, 35, disappeared from her home on N.W. 66th Terrace near U.S. Highway 169 sometime Jan. 2, and police are still searching for her. Police suspect foul play after finding Pernice’s cell phone at 6th Street and Gladstone Boulevard in Northeast Kansas City. They currently have no suspects. According to police, Renee Pernice was last seen by her husband, Shon Pernice, an Independence firefighter and Iraq veteran, on the morning of Jan. 2. Shon Pernice was allegedly asleep at the time of her disappearance.Pretz reported her missing Jan. 3.

Shon Pernice is cooperating with police through an attorney.

Mom of Three Vanishes Without a Trace

Woman's Husband Isn't Talking, Cops Say

It was Renee's father, Rick Pretz, who first reported his daughter missing on the morning of Saturday, Jan. 3. Pretz said that he last spoke to his daughter the evening of Jan. 1.

Renee Pernice, 35, was last seen by her husband, Shon Pernice, on the morning of Jan. 2, when Pernice said his wife left and he "doesn't remember where he went," according to police.
(Courtesy Kansas City Police Department )Renee's mother, Linda Lockwood, told ABCNews.com that the past few days have been "heartbreaking."

"It's been a very emotional time for us because we know that our daughter would not just leave her children and just take off on her own," said Lockwood, who last spoke to Renee on Dec. 27.

Lockwood said that her daughter had sounded "well" during their conversation.

"She has always been just a wonderful child," said Lockwood. "We just want her back."

Renee's cell phone was found 15 miles from her home on Sunday by a vagrant, said Lockhart, who has since been combing the area for additional clues. Lockhart declined to specify what, if any, information was garnered from the cell phone.

Pernice's Family: Report Stands On Its Own

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The family of a missing Northland woman talks for the first time since Friday's bombshell police report.

Renee Pernice, 35, was reported missing Jan. 2.

In the report, police say they found blood in Renee's garage and divorce papers in her office.

The family won't know if it's Renee's blood until the lab results come back.

The report also states that Renee's husband Shon gave conflicting stories about when she disappeared.

"We think the report stands on its own. We believe it shows how hard the police are working," said Rick Pretz, Renee's dad.

The family isn't giving up on their daughter but every day gets harder to stay positive.

"I've got a hole in my heart," said Linda Lockwood, Renee's mom.

"Every day is an emotional day and yesterday was one of the biggies," said Pretz.

Renee and Shon have two children together and are said to be staying with their dad. Shon also has a daughter from a previous marriage.

They haven't seen their grandparents since Renee went missing.

"As you can imagine, we've lost our loved one and we can't reach out to her and we'd dearly love to see those boys," said Pretz.

Police suspect foul play is involved but have not named any suspects.

I served with SGT Shon Pernice in Iraq. He was IN MY UNIT. I know that Shon Pernice cheated on his wife, talked constantly about how much he hated his wife…the man honestly said that all she did was ‘**ck up my life.’ He lied in an interview to KC Fox News on July 4th…we NEVER GOT MORTARED….EVER…and he timed the explosion in the background to make it seem that way. EOD (explosive ordinance disposal) had a scheduled detonation of some explosive ordinance on that day and he wanted to make it look like he saw “action.” He’s a piece of **it…I know that personally.

I know Shon-I agree with the Military guy a 100 percent! Shon is a piece of **it! He always bragged about being in the Mafia and he knew how to get rid of a body if he had too! He said that on more than one occasion! He was a whack job! God Bless Renee’s family and children.
