Penfield Teen Missing
Published Dec 31, 2007 Police across the country are on the lookout for a Penfield teen who ran away from home two days before Christmas. Andrew Dezio's father says he got into an argument with his 15-year-old son over a video game, and Andrew ran out. Family and friends handed out more than 1,000 missing person fliers at plazas in Penfield Monday. Andrew's family filed a missing person's report with police Christmas Eve. "I tell you what, I've never even come close to goin' through anything like this,” Andrew’s father Greg Dezio said. “It's really hit me the last few days because right now it's a thinking thing. You're trying to come up with answers, you don't even know why, it's crazy." Authorities are concerned because Andrew left his house with nothing but his cell phone. Investigators say the GPS tracking system on his phone put Andrew within 25 square miles of Fairport a few days ago. Authorities lost that signal on the 27th. They're asking anyone with information on Andrew Dezio’s whereabouts to call 911. http://www.rnews.com/Story_2004.cfm?..._story_type=18 |

Police search from air, Perinton teen still missing
(January 2, 2008) — Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies and State Police troopers yesterday searched near the Perinton home of a missing Penfield high school student. Sheriff’s spokesman Cpl. John Helfer today said the efforts to locate Andrew J. Dezio in the area near his home on Golf Stream Drive were not fruitful. Andrew, a 15-year-old a sophomore, left his family home about 10 p.m. Dec. 23 after an argument with a family member and has not been seen since then, said sheriff’s Lt. Michael Fowler. Deputies yesterday used all-terrain vehicles and were assisted by canine deputies in the area near the home, Helfer said. Several deputies and their horse partners also joined in the 9.5-hour search. Troopers assisted from the air, searching from the State Police helicopter. Andrew plays hockey for Penfield High’s junior varsity as well as for a travel team in a "house league," Fowler said. Family members called the Sheriff’s Office on Dec.24 and deputies began investigating. Sheriff’s officials waited until Monday to publicly announce the case because missing youths usually turn up fairly quickly, Fowler said, and because information that investigators have pursued has led nowhere. “We would like to think Andrew is hanging out with friends and he just doesn’t want to come home yet,” Fowler said. Investigators are particularly concerned because of the length of time that Andrew has been missing, and because he left home just before Christmas. Also, Andrew was wearing blue jeans, a white shirt and white sneakers — clothing not warm enough for this time of year, Fowler said. Fowler described Andrew as a good student and said Andrew has no history of running away. He lives with his father and siblings; his mother died years ago, Fowler said. Andrew has a small scar under his left eye and recently got a brush-cut haircut. Anyone with information about Andrew is asked to call 911 or call the sheriff’s "A" zone at (585) 753-4900 and ask for Investigator Andrew White or a supervisor. http://www.democratandchronicle.com/...EWS01/80102004 |

School joins search for teenager
January 3, 2008 3:01 am — Penfield High School officials sent out letters to parents Wednesday seeking information in the ongoing search for missing student Andrew Dezio. Andrew, a 15-year-old sophomore, left his family home on Golf Stream Drive in Perinton about 10 p.m. Dec. 23 after an argument with a family member and has not been seen since, according to Monroe County sheriff's officials. The district is making counselors available for students who need assistance, said principal Mark Van Vliet in the letter. Meanwhile, sheriff's deputies and State Police searched near Andrew's home Tuesday but found nothing. Deputies used all-terrain vehicles and were assisted by canine deputies in the area near Andrew's home, said Cpl. John Helfer. Several deputies and their horse partners also joined in the 9.5-hour search. Troopers assisted from the air, searching from a State Police helicopter. "It's more of investigating leads right now, but we just wanted to canvass the area," Helfer said. Andrew plays hockey for Penfield High's junior varsity team as well as for a travel team in a house league, sheriff's Lt. Michael Fowler said during a previous news conference. The travel team is part of Perinton Youth Hockey. The organization has posted information and photos of Andrew on its Web site, at www.perintonyouthhockey.org. Family members called the Sheriff's Office on Dec. 24 and deputies began investigating. Sheriff's officials waited until Monday to publicize the case because missing youths usually turn up fairly quickly, Fowler said, and because information that investigators have pursued has led nowhere. Investigators are particularly concerned because of the length of time that Andrew has been missing, and because he left home just before Christmas. Also, Andrew was wearing blue jeans, a white shirt and white sneakers — clothing not warm enough for this time of year, Fowler said. Andrew lives with his father and siblings; his mother died years ago. Andrew has a small scar under his left eye and recently got a brush cut. Anyone with information about Andrew is asked to call 911 or call the sheriff's "A" Zone at (585) 753-4900 and ask for Investigator Andrew White or a supervisor. http://www.democratandchronicle.com/...0337/1002/NEWS |

Police locate teen's body
Missing student, 15, found near home; Penfield friends mourn loss James Hawver Staff writer January 9, 2008 4:59 am — PERINTON — The mood was somber Tuesday at Penfield High School, where many people wept after learning that search teams had found the body of a student missing for two weeks. Andrew Dezio, a 15-year-old sophomore, left his house on Golf Stream Drive about 10 p.m. Dec. 23 after an argument with a family member, according to Monroe County sheriff's officials. Deputies resumed their search for Andrew at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday and found the body within 10 minutes in a wooded area by Baird Road and Sunberry Drive, near Midvale Golf and County Club. The site was just a few hundred yards from his home. There was no sign of foul play, said Monroe County Sheriff Patrick O'Flynn. An autopsy to determine the cause of death will be conducted by the Monroe County Medical Examiner's Office. Penfield High School principal Mark Van Vliet gave students the news shortly before noon by closed-circuit television. "You speak from the heart, and you tell them how sorry you are, and you console them," Van Vliet said after school. The school sent a letter home to parents that included suggestions from counselors on how to help their teens cope with the loss. Tuesday was difficult for the entire school community, Van Vliet said, but especially the sophomore class. "I've never heard it so quiet," said sophomore Spencer Bewick, Andrew's friend. "It's not supposed to happen. He was just 15." Spencer said classmates roamed the halls in a daze, many with tears in their eyes. Some visited with school counselors. Others needed to go home. Friends talked about piercing their ears in tribute to Andrew. "I was devastated," said Fairport High School sophomore Brad Allison, 16, who played with Andrew on a Perinton Youth Hockey team. Although he lived in Perinton, Andrew's house was within the Penfield school district, and he played hockey with many Fairport students. Brad, like many of Andrew's teammates who go to Fairport High School, left school Tuesday. "He's just one of those kids that if you're having a bad day, he would just say something that would cheer you right up," Brad said. That sounds just like Andrew, said Jim Spawton, an assistant coach on the Perinton hockey team. "He was always the clown out there on the ice," said Spawton. He laughed as he described Andrew's tendency to charge the length of the rink with the puck and drive so close to the opposing net that he would rarely get off a shot. "I would always tell him, 'For me, you are a never-ending source of entertainment,'" Spawton said. Andrew was found wearing blue jeans, a white shirt and white sneakers. It's the outfit his family said he was wearing when he left on Dec. 23, and the clothing was not warm enough for this time of year, O'Flynn said. He added that although Andrew's cell phone was no longer active — the signal died on Dec. 27 — deputies tracked the last active signal to the nearest cell tower, which in turn led to the discovery of Andrew's body. Deputies previously searched an area near Andrew's home on Jan. 2, using all-terrain vehicles and dogs. Several mounted deputies and a State Police helicopter also joined in the 9½-hour search. They continued the search Tuesday morning after new information was able to pinpoint Andrew's cell phone within a one-mile radius. Within 10 minutes of searching, his body was found under thick brush in the densely wooded area. Deputies began investigating after family members called the Sheriff's Office on Dec. 24.
