Unhappy John Roberts missing [FOUND DECEASED] from Champaign, IL

Police are continuing to search for an elderly man with dementia who has been missing since this morning.

John Roberts is a 74 year-old black man, 5' 6", and weighs 130 pounds.

His wife, Jannie Roberts, last saw him asleep at 6:00 a.m. Just two hours later she discovered he was gone.

Roberts uses an oxygen tank to help with breathing, but he does not have it with him.

Police began search efforts immediately.

"They came out, they've been very helpful," Roberts said. "They had a canine out, that didn't work. Then they proceeded with a bloodhound, so now, they're still looking for him."

Police say he may be wearing blue jeans without a shirt or shoes.

If you have any information about where Roberts may be call the Champaign police at 351-4545.

No shirt, shoes or oxygen, in this terrible weather. I hope they find him soon.

We are in a really bad freeze right now here. Its not even 20 degrees. I will check the news at 6, and see if there is any news on him.

Thanks. I feel so bad for people with dementia or Alzheimer's. It's so demeaning to them.

Champaign Police Search For Missing Man
Reported by: Matt Franzblau/WCIA-3
Wednesday, Jan 2, 2008 @06:20pm CST

Champaign police were out in full force Wednesday trying to find an elderly man who wandered off this morning. 74-year old John Roberts left his Nelson Court home sometime after 6:00. He suffers from breathing problems and dementia. His wife says she woke up and found his tube from his breathing machine out the door as well as footprints in the snow. "I'm worried but you know they're out there looking for him.” Says wife Jannie Roberts “I'm saying that he might be at somebody's house, I don't know." "It's very cold.” Says Champaign Police officer Ed Wachala “We're trying to work very quickly and as hard as we can to locate him, trying to find out where he is." Police say he may have been wearing blue jeans, a t-shirt and a tan jacket when he left. Neighbors spotted him a few blocks from his house shortly after he disappeared, but there's been no sign of him since.

I know Ed Wachala very well and I trust he is working very hard to find this man.

Sad to say, Mr. Roberts was found deceased late this evening in the backyard of a neighboring home. My condolences to his family!

Just an hour after his family found out about his death, they were not thinking of themselves, but wanting thank all of the people who helped them in their search.

Robert's wife says she last saw him asleep. She found a piece of his oxygen machine just outside the front door and foot tracks, that seemed to lead to no where. Robert's suffered from breathing problems and dementia.

Officers and neighbors spent the whole day looking for him. HIs wife, Jannie Roberts wanted to make sure he'd be remembered as a good man, "He loved people and he loved kids so i have something to be thankful for."

Roberts was found behind a house just a few blocks away. They're not sure how long he'd been out there but did say he had severe hypothermia.
